I’ve been a member of Hub Radio (Student radio station at the University of the West of England, Bristol) for five years now. During that time, I’ve been a presenter, producer, audio and IT technician, operations manager and station manager. I’ve now stepped back, only doing my own radio show.
I’ve helped multiple shows with producing their show. From sorting out content, producing a running order, keeping the show on track and on time and everything that’s comes with the job. Pretty standard things.
Recent successes include an Outside Broadcast of the final of Battle of the Bands 2015. The event was broadcast live on Hub, with interviews of all the acts and post-results reaction.
Other work include co-producing with Mike Burton on recent editions of the Student Radio Chart Show, hosted by Charlie Roper and Dom Rowles. This went out nationally across a network of student radio stations.
I have also produced shows for various presenters and shows, including ‘The Charlie Roper Show’, ‘The Pre-Game Kick Off’ (American Football talk show), and others.
I do some radio presenting as well, be rude not to! It’s something I enjoy, not something I necessarily want to take as a career (but if you do think I’m more than good do let me know/offer me a job!)
When I joined Hub in 2010, there was only Steve Hagerty, a member of university staff taking care of the tech equipment. There was very limited student involvement and some of the technology was dated.
Over the last few years I have been working to improve this situation. We now have a dedicated Head of Tech, multiple members in the station with audio tech or IT background who now help the station, and a dedicated web developer.
Projects during my time have involved rebuilding the main Frenchay studio with new equipment, replacing outdated XP P4 computers and servers, establishing Outside Broadcast capabilities, complete overhaul of the back end of Hub, creating applications such as RadioPanel stats and RiotSchedule, and build a secondary Frenchay studio. My final upcoming project with Hub will be assisting with Hub’s move into the new Hub studios in the new Students’ Union building.
